Practice info – Cornerstone Care, Incorporated, began operations in 1977 as Southeastern Greene Community Health Center. Our first patient registered for an examination with a nurse practitioner in the former dining room of a two-story nineteenth century brick house on the banks of the Monongahela River in Greensboro, Pennsylvania. Organized by a group of concerned local citizens, the center was established to serve the communities in Greene and Fayette Counties with comprehensive, convenient, high quality, ambulatory health care where before none had existed. In 1989, community volunteers helped to build the organization’s first modern facility; a 12,000 square foot center in Greensboro. The first doctors joined the organization in 1981. Dental care began soon after in a small country church building.
Area Description – Greene County is one of the two counties in Pennsylvania identified by the Appalachian Regional Commission as a distressed Appalachian county. The physical environment of the County has been highly eroded over time by the elements, improper use, and exploitable environmental harvesting. All of Greene County’s 576 square miles are contained in the Appalachian Mountains and approximately 57% of the County’s square acreage is forestland. The County is also listed by the Census as one of the Commonwealth’s predominantly rural counties in which 68.75% of its residents live in a rural area. Over 88% of the population of Greene County lives in communities of less than 500 people.
The physical character of the roads can also be a deterrent to seeking health care during inclement weather, which can double travel time or curtail travel altogether outside of the local community. In fact, while communities across the country are adding new highways every day, Greene County now has fewer roads than it did 15 years ago. In 1997, an existing community health center, struggling to keep its doors open, merged with Cornerstone Care to create the Community Medical and Dental Services Plaza near Burgettstown; in rural northwestern Washington County. During 2001, mental health services were initiated at this site.
